In the 1880s, the interests of the Richmond YMCA, the association’s national building program and muscular Christianity combined to create the first Y facility here.
The process began on January 4, 1885, when evangelist Dwight Moody spoke at a large religious meeting in Armory Hall. Following his appearance, enthusiasm grew for constructing a local YMCA building. Association leaders and members saw, as did their counterparts across the nation, that such a facility could achieve tremendous good.

“Our aim, in brief, is to have the very best building, and do the very best for young men that is done anywhere—a work that shall grow as our city grows and as the work of the Young Men’s Christian Association develops,” a member wrote in a letter to the Richmond Dispatch.
Strong local support facilitated a speedy start. Within a year of Moody’s appearance, the Richmond YMCA had raised $30,000, selected an architect, approved plans, acquired a lot at the northwest corner of Sixth and Main Streets, and solicited bids from builders. Work formally began on June 10, 1886, after the ceremonial laying of a cornerstone. The building was dedicated on May 19, 1887.

The new Richmond YMCA shared many traits with the 23rd Street YMCA in New York, including a gym. Like the New York Y, Richmond’s had a solid appearance. The Richmond building had a rough granite exterior at the first floor level. Brick was above that. Stone was used for windowsills. The entrance was on Main Street, and a large corner tower stood at Main and Sixth.

“The architecture is to the fullest extent free, yet based chiefly on motives derived from the vigorous styles prevailing in Southern France and Northern Italy during the eleventh and twelfth centuries,” the Richmond Dispatch reported. “Its prototypes, if it can be said to have any, are to be found among the grand old markets or town halls of Lombardy, as well as with the massive churches of Auvergne. In this sense, the style may be roughly classed as Romanesque.”

The gym was in the basement. It measured 50 by 50 by 20 feet and extended into the second floor. A bowling alley and locker room were next to the gym. Anybody wishing to use the gym paid a $7 annual fee. For that, they got a well-equipped facility.
“Our equipment is the finest in the state,” a period circular reported. “It includes the latest appliances in developing apparatus—the celebrated Murphy Pulley Weight, a new Hydraulic Rowing Machine, Iron and Wooden Dumb Bells, Wands and Indian Clubs. The equipment in heavy apparatus is of the latest pattern, and consists of Horizontal and Parallel bars, German Horse and Buck, with a bountiful supply of well-padded Floor Mats—Baths: Shower, Needle and Sponge Baths are supplied with hot and cold water.”

The new YMCA quickly became a busy place. It remained one for the next 25 years. One measure of this was the usage. By 1893, 92,608 people came to the facility annually. Some came for spiritual reasons. The Y offered Bible study, prayer meetings and referred members to local churches.

Library visitation was high. Classes proved popular, too. Young men could learn about a variety of subjects at the Y. The best attended courses were those applicable to work. These included bookkeeping, commercial law, telegraphy and commercial arithmetic. The value of professional classes for hardworking, ambitious young men cannot be over-estimated. Testimonials confirming this appeared frequently in newsletters of the period. For example, in 1902, a new Richmond YMCA member told how night school classes at the 23rd Street YMCA in New York had allowed him to succeed in industry after previously being unemployed.

The most popular activities at the Richmond YMCA were those associated with sports and fitness. Y members enthusiastically embraced “muscular Christianity” on the baseball diamond, tennis court and floor. Workouts in the latter were executed under the careful eye of the new gymnasium superintendent, Thomas Cornelius, formerly of the Baltimore YMCA. Apparently, Cornelius was a firm advocate of bodybuilding, a term that originated at the Boston YMCA. Cornelius even encouraged members to skip learning gymnastic routines, a much-promoted pathway to fitness in the nineteenth century.

In the realm of sports, though, the warmest enthusiasm existed for the recently invented game of basketball. James Naismith, a physical education instructor, created basketball under the guidance of Luther Gulick, then director of the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. Gulick wanted a fast-paced indoor game for winter. Naismith began work on the project in December 1891. Naismith’s early experiments involved mounting peach baskets in the gym. Initially, basketball had just 13 rules. Students loved the game. Naismith developed more detailed rules and published them on January 15, 1892. The first formal basketball game occurred five days later at Springfield College.

It is unclear when basketball arrived at the Richmond YMCA. However, by 1898, documents show basketball was a centerpiece of local Y sports programs. Leagues and championship play were permanent features by the early 1900s. The Richmond YMCA’s first home was thoroughly a product of its time, the movement and its community. For the better part of three decades, it would serve well the needs of Richmonders’ spirits, minds and bodies.

Boy, it'd be interesting to see today's NCAA basketball getting by on just 13 rules. How different the game is with the shot clock violation, the 10-second rule, the 5-second rule, and the 3-point shot.
The original YMCA was replaced the by Central YMCA in 1909 when it relocated to Seventh & Grace Streets. The old building was demolished in 1912 when the Eskimo Pie Building was constructed. This was a pity; a true loss to Richmond’s architectural portfolio.
Even though the Sanborn map shows the old Y’s address as 514 East Main Street, the Eskimo Pie Building is at 530 East Main Street, and it says so right on the entrance. It even says so on the Sixth Street entrance, which is a little confusing, but let’s just roll with it.

Udo—the Igbo word for peace upon the village—is an archive of reckoning with the concept of peace itself, as it relates practically to belonging and community. Nigerian-American dancer and singer/songwriter Kingsley Ibeneche was born, raised and is currently living in Camden, New Jersey. He has performed internationally and on national network television including SNL and MTV's VMAs, and has written, directed and choreographed works at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Barnes Foundation; Realms: A Soul Opera and Dear Empath, respectively. Udo is his debut album. After working together on Realms in 2019—the culmination of years’ multidisciplinary training and work in dance and performance—Ibeneche teamed up with long-time collaborator, Philadelphia-based producer Lee Clarke, to make what would be his first full-length album as a recording artist. As the project began to take shape, Ibeneche chose the name Udo, after his father’s village in Nigeria. Thus began what would unfurl as a multi-year process which included a long hiatus in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a return to the studio that winter. Ibeneche’s father passed away during the late stages of the album’s production. “You learn about a project after it’s done. My father is an ancestor now, which has changed my heart about the album,” says Ibeneche. Udo is a record in every sense of the word: It documents the emotional experience of an empathic person who stays bound to their kin sometimes to the detriment of themselves, but who refuses to give up the quest for elation, personal peace and self-actualization in the process. This is both an ancient and extant way of existing in human relationship that will not—in fact, cannot—neglect the whole for the benefit of the individual. Chronicling his own experience inside the tracks of Udo—on boundaries, frustration, yearning to go, dreaming and love—Ibeneche has left breadcrumbs for those seeking home in a restless and transient society. But these songs are not maps so much as they are acknowledgments. “A lot of the time it feels like sacrifice, and it's rare to see that there’s light to it,” says Ibeneche. As it turns out, peace in the village involves generosity that is not always reciprocated, the human mind itself is a trickster, and none of us are alone. The album’s first single, “So Kind,” is a chant to boundaries, a renunciation of excessive kindness when kindness is not what is called for and an invocation summoning a more complex, flexible reality. But the struggle continues in “What You Want,” where Ibeneche continues to wrestle with the transactional nature of love and overwhelm in the responsibility of community. He walks the line between “the oceans of despair, and allegiance to my heart. Drowning only because I never let them know I can’t float all the time.” Udo presents a kaleidoscopic experience of belonging that is: joy and agony, love and loathing, delight and disgust, pride and shame. House Dems Unveil 18-Bill ‘Respecting Educators Package’

Seven years ago, Darrin Camilleri was a fresh college graduate and new to a teacher with no textbooks, no curriculum and a big job in addition to his teaching duties: hired professor. Now he is a state representative and hopes to be part of the “transformational change” in the educational profession.
Camilleri, D-Trenton and other Democratic House lawmakers on Wednesday unveiled a package of 18 bills unveiled this week to improve the professional landscape and better recruit, respect, and retain classroom teachers in Michigan.
“There was a time when Michigan was the envy of the world for education and teacher salaries and benefits, but in the past few decades we know that has changed,” Camilleri said at a press conference to announce the bill. “If we want our best and brightest teachers to become teachers and stay in the classroom, we must act decisively now to respect and appreciate the profession.”
Various proposals in the Respecting Educators package would, among other things, offset student loan debt, reduce health care costs, change the reading law for third grade, remove student test scores from teacher reviews, and create a pathway between entry level teachers and teachers.
“It is our duty to ensure that every child has the opportunity and the resources they need to be successful, but without great teachers and educators in our schools this cannot happen,” said Camilleri.

MEA member Anthony Barnes spoke at the press conference in support of the comprehensive legislative package. “I’ve seen some amazing educators leave education because they can’t support themselves or their families financially, don’t feel respected, and the burnout rate is extremely high.”
Barnes, a sixth year special education teacher in Kalamazoo, noted a historically high quota of teachers – including a 40% increase during the pandemic last fall and winter – coupled with declining enrollments in teacher prep programs at colleges and universities across the state.
“I’m just in graduate school so my student loan debt is still growing,” Barnes said. “I’m telling you it’s stressful and my salary doesn’t really help me make up for it – although I work to improve every day so I can improve our educational system.”
Two bills in the package address the student loan problem. House Bill 5099, sponsored by Camilleri, would create a student loan program for eligible teachers that would cover up to $ 300 per month in student loan payments as long as the recipient stays in the field. Another bill by Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac), HB 5100, would amend the tax law to make student loan payments tax-free.
AFT Michigan member Kathi Martin also spoke out in favor of the bills. The 18-year-old speech and language pathologist from Dearborn and her husband, a special needs education, collectively earn $ 1,000 in student loans a month, she said.
This burden – combined with falling takeaway salaries and rising costs over the past decade – forced her to take a part-time job, which shortens the time she has to prepare for the students outside of working hours. You could earn better outside of the education sector, she noted.
The “Respecting Educators” package deals with these problems from several directions. HB 5106, sponsored by Rep. Mari Manoogian (D-Birmingham), would require school districts to pay a larger proportion of educator health premiums by imposing a fixed cap of 90-10 until the cost is 10% above the cap lie.
Proposed “fair pay” proposal HB 5109 – sponsored by Rep. Kelly Breen (D-Novi) – would create a three tier best practice bonus system ($ 20, $ 30, and $ 35 per student) based on whether teachers 95% receive. , 100% or 110% of the average salary of people with the same training in their field.
HB 5102, sponsored by Rep. Abraham Aiyash (D-Hamtramck), would allow tax-allocated funds to be allocated to certain schools to reimburse certified teachers for expenses. And his companion from Rep. Angela Witwer (D-Delta Township), HB 5103, would allow taxpayers an over-the-line deduction from adjusted gross income for contributions to the Local Teacher Supply Reimbursement Program Act.
Finally, HB 5110 – sponsored by Rep. Christine Morse, Texas Township, D – would require the state to pay teacher certification and recertification fees in order to reduce teacher spending.
“We cannot rely on education to be their calling as the sole motivation for recruiting teachers who are at the heart of our education system,” Morse said at the press conference. “It’s not a sustainable model. We have to treat the teaching profession like a qualified profession and not a passion project. “
In addition to the financial burden, according to Martin von Dearborn, educators experience the loss of joy and creativity – replaced by the pressure of standardized tests and poorly thought-out mandates such as the third-grade reading law, year-round testing and the retention of young people based on a test result.
“Taking the fun of learning and replacing it with useless tests harms our students and destroys teacher morale, which seeps through to the younger generations,” she said. “We are finally seeing the effects of the attack on public education that has been going on for about 15 years.
“When a profession is belittled, scapegoated, and vilified as educators were, can you blame people for leaving or not entering teacher training programs?”
Four bills in the package relate to third grade reading and reviews. HB 4574, sponsored by former educator and MEA member Rep. Nate Shannon (D-Sterling Heights), would allow teachers to follow up in deciding whether to keep a non-grade student through third grade to decide at their own discretion.
House Bill 5101, sponsored by Rep. Cara Clemente (D-Lincoln Park), would change the requirements for early literacy screening to allow for the professional judgment of teachers.
While teachers don’t get enough credit for everything they do, para-professionals get even less, said former teacher and MEA member Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth), promoting his account of creating a non-teaching path for parasites, to get their teacher certification.
“Our parapros are the ones who work with each student individually to ensure that they are successful,” said Koleszar when the package was announced on Facebook. “My bill, HB 4369, creates a pipeline for Parapros to achieve their full teaching certification, resulting in more passionate, skilled educators in our classrooms.”
Another suggestion to build a pipeline of future teacher candidates was made at the press conference by Rep. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing), who noted that she had brought two of her former teachers as special guests when she was sworn in for her first full semester at State Parliament 2019.
“They shaped and shaped me into who I am today and we often forget that,” said Anthony. “Those of us in the Halls of Power have a responsibility to step on the plate. Every single child deserves access to an excellent local public school so that they have the opportunity to grow and live a successful life, but none of this can happen without our educators. “
Anthony’s bill, HB 5107, would create a professional-technical teacher preparation program that would enable high school students to work towards meeting teacher certification requirements through courses and experiential learning.
“This package won’t solve every problem we face in one fell swoop, but it is an important first step on the road to the best possible education system,” said Anthony. “It shows that we value our educators as much as other qualified, trained professionals by paying our educators appropriately, respecting them, and truly treating them as the experts they are in the field.”
Other bills in the Respecting Educators package would:
Remove the student growth component from teacher ratings – HB 5104 and 5106 by former teacher and MEA member Rep. Lori Stone (D-Warren) and Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia);
Create a $ 25 per student category for districts that are lowering the year-over-year teacher-student ratio and prioritize the districts with the highest rates first – HB 5111 by Rep. Helena Scott, D-Detroit;
Request school improvement plans that include individual professional development plans for teachers – HB 5108 by Rep. Kara Hope (D-Holt);
Require that teacher preparation programs include a class management course – HB 5112 also from Stone; and
Request Alternate Classroom Management Training – HB 5113 from Rep. Regina Weiss (D-Oak Park).

As part of a renewal agreement for the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, the city of Montreal had to replace the existing temporary structures with a larger permanent building that would more adequately meet the needs of the event. The new paddock includes garages for the teams, offices for the International automobile Federation (FIA) and the promoter, a lounge area for 5,000 people and a Multimedia Center for journalists and broadcasters. All furniture and equipment are shipped from abroad and installed for the duration of the event.
To facilitate the completion of the$ 50 million project in the 10 free months between the two Grand Prix editions, the building was designed as an assembly of prefabricated parts including concrete panels, steel beams and columns, CLT wooden beams and panels, curtain walls and removable partitions. It can also be easily disassembled and recycled materials in case of Grand Prix termination.
Unlike other international grands Prix, the lounge areas have no exterior walls and are not air-conditioned, the interior spaces are minimally finished and the building must make responsible use of the public funds invested while equipping Montreal with equipment that reflects our identity and values for an event seen by more than 300 million people around the world.
Concept The building echoes the innovative structures that marked Quebec’s imagination when the 1967 World’s Fair was held on the site of Île Notre-Dame. The Terre des Hommes logo using the Y to represent men with outstretched hands remains an indelible symbol of this summer that marked the advent of modernity here. The wooden structure proposed for the roof is based geometrically on this memory and reflects our desire to move away from the images and values usually associated with motor racing and more specifically with Formula 1. The advent of new owners and executives at the head of the circuit has made possible the acceptance of this proposal, which corresponds to their desire to move away from the ostentatious globalized luxury in order to highlight the cultural and geographical specificity of each stage of the circuit and adapt it to emerging values.
The new Paddocks will accommodate up to 13 stables, each of which will have two front access for single-seaters, drivers and technical teams, as well as a service access located at the rear of the building for equipment or for quick access to the redeveloped hospitality area.
Designed without a permanent division, the garage space is modular according to the needs of the teams at each edition of the Canadian Grand Prix : temporary partitions will be used to create the desired divisions and thus suit the technical needs of this constantly evolving sport.
The building presents a completely new configuration of the space for sports commentators and representatives of the FIA and FOWC : the distribution has been redesigned to meet the need for stakeholder interactions with the action taking place on the circuit. Unlike the Old control tower which was made at height to offer good visibility on the track, the new tower is arranged horizontally on 2 floors right in the building, as new race control technologies now require less direct visibility.
A media space is integrated into the building rather than being located in a temporary marquee, in order to provide quality services to journalistic representatives, namely modular lighting, a suitable ventilation system and electrical and telecommunications connection boxes including optical fiber.
This media space is also a rental space made available to Montrealers for events outside the Grand Prix period in all seasons.
The building has been designed to multiply the views on the race track, but also on the entire environment of the park that surrounds it, with the development of several terraces on the 2nd and 3rd floors.
The new building being higher presents a 360-degree panorama to the spectators. On one side, a close-up view of Jean-Doré Beach, the Casino de Montréal, former Pavilion of France during Expo 67, as well as the former Pavilion of Quebec that is adjacent to it. In the distance, the city of Montreal, Mount Royal and its cross are visible.
On the other side, you can see at first glance the Olympic pool where groups of rowing, canoeing and dragon boats train. Behind, a narrow passage of the St. Lawrence River crossed by freight boats, then the South Shore of Montreal.
Universal accessibility Accessibility has been completely redesigned in the new building : the entire ground floor is on the same level as the ground and the floors are accessible via a panoramic glass elevator located at the east entrance. Bleachers and bathrooms are also provided to ensure universal accessibility and ease of travel.
Sustainable development The structure of the roof of 1425 m3 is made of wood, a durable and renewable material. Since, during its growth, wood captures CO2 from the atmosphere and sequesters it in its fiber, this volume of wood corresponds to the sequestration of more than 1,000 tons of CO2. Wood is thus considered carbonegative, which means that not only does the use of wood in construction generate low carbon emissions, but also helps to remove additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
The waterproofing of the roof is carried out with an elastomeric coating covered with white mineral granules in order to limit the heat island effect and the temperature rise for the spectators.
The solar photovoltaic panels on the terrace total 64 m2 and should store enough solar energy in one year to compensate for the energy expenditure required for the complete building at a Grand Prix. The installed system will provide an average of 87,600 kw/hre per year and the estimated energy consumption during the Formula 1 event is 88,940 kw / hre.
Local Production The wood used for the beams, in the form of glued and cross-laminated (CLT), as well as for the decking, in the form of cross-laminated, comes from northern Quebec and values species and small pieces of wood to optimize the fiber of all the trees during the cutting. The precast concrete parts come from a Quebec company, as are the curtain walls and the steel structure. The division into several separate batches of the structure (concrete, steel and Wood) allowed the simultaneous production in the factory of colossal quantities of material as well as their erection in a very limited period of time and despite a harsh winter.

So You Want to Open a Hotel? Now? Before the pandemic began, the second location of The June Motel, a 24-room boutique hotel in Sauble Beach, Ontario, was set to open in late last spring. To be fully ramped up for Lake Huron’s 2020 beach season was the goal. Construction stopped in mid April, however, leaving the property’s restaurant with half-installed floor tiles and guest rooms that hadn’t yet been coated in cheery blush-colored paint. April Brown and Sarah Sklash, the June’s co-owners, weighed three scenarios: not open at all; open as a rooms-for-rent Airbnb model without amenities; or push the opening until Labor Day. “A lot of it came down to: Can we financially wait three months to open?” Ms. Brown said of their decision to delay. “The reason we were able to do that is that we got a lot of subsidies. We got grants; we kept several employees on payroll. There was a lot of support from the Canadian government for the tourism and hospitality sector.” Over the past decade, tourism destinations around the world saw record hotel development. In 2019 alone, a global construction binge increased the number of hotel rooms by 8 percent compared to the year before. But in 2020 — and, now, 2021 — the lodging industry has faced almost unbelievable challenges: increasingly complicated restrictions on domestic and international travel, virus safety protocols that require resources and training, and strict testing mandates and quarantine requirements for travelers. Which leads any rational person to wonder: Is it wise to open a new hotel during a pandemic? According to a recent report by Lodging Econometrics, which tracks the lodging industry, more than 900 hotels opened in the United States last year — more than 100,000 new rooms. This year, another 960 new hotels are expected to open. The owners and operators fueling these projects have done so are going beyond hiring bartenders and housekeepers, ordering linens and signage, and establishing booking systems and marketing plans. They must also implement disinfection protocols, enforce distancing and mask wearing, and figure out how to make the numbers work in a climate that isn’t all that favorable to travel. For Ms. Sklash and Ms. Brown, the government support was a game-changer, but their success during the pandemic also relied on a slate of virus-safety measures, a doubled-down approach to attracting locals and a cool, escapist atmosphere. Others in the industry have echoed similar tactics — and have even found some unexpected perks during these unprecedented times. “When you open a new place during Covid, you get to say, ‘This is the experience you get,’” Ms. Brown said. “You’re not saying, ‘This is the new experience.’ It’s just the experience. There was nothing comparable to what we used to do, which can be a benefit.” ‘It was down to the bitter end’ Delaying the opening gave Ms. Brown and Ms. Sklash time to create new policies and determine their new priorities. They implemented a shift-coverage system, should a staffer awaken with a fever, and tinkered with personal touches — in-room canned wine, for example, served as a good stand-in for a glass that would have otherwise been poured for a guest at check-in. When reservations opened in July, Ms. Brown and Ms. Sklash hit their fall financial target in a day, thanks, in part, to organic marketing efforts on Instagram, where the June’s page is a frothy expression of beaches and pastel hues. Within 30 minutes of releasing rooms for Labor Day Weekend, the entire hotel sold out for the three-night minimum. “The independents aren’t going to be backed up by an extensive brand and marketing program and an enormous customer database,” said Kate Walsh, the dean at Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration, contrasting the opening of smaller hotels to that of larger chains. “So they’re going to have to really double down on how they convey what that experience might be and why.” Ms. Brown and Ms. Sklash also shifted funds earmarked for the restaurant to the patio, which they kitted out with string lights, stylish furniture and greenery. But two weeks before opening, another outdoor space — the pool deck — was only partially finished. “Home construction projects were up — everyone wanted to renovate,” Ms. Brown said. “Our contractor went to the hardware store twice a day for at least 10 days before we had the wood we needed. It was down to the bitter end.” At first, the housekeeping team serviced rooms upon request only and left newly vacated rooms empty for at least a day before cleaning them. That strategy worked fine until peak season hit in June, driving occupancy above 50 percent. “No problem; we’ll buy commercial electrostatic sprayers and sanitize the room,” said Glenn E. Tuckman, the chief operating officer and managing director of the Cavalier Resort Complex, the $350 million, mixed-use complex that includes the new Marriott. “Problem was: No one had them. The airlines bought them all before the hotel industry realized their value. We found ours on eBay, but we paid for it.” ‘There was no playbook’ As hotel owners and operators have confronted the challenges of the pandemic, Dr. Walsh said, safety has emerged as the biggest priority. “Safety is paramount — it’s the essential part of bringing the guests back,” she said. “And the challenge for hotels is showing that they are safe and secure.” Miraval Berkshires, the 100-room spa resort in Lenox, Mass. — where this writer spent two nights over Christmas after shelling out tens of thousands of World of Hyatt points — was about 90 percent complete when the pandemic hit. Construction stopped until June 1; the opening was pushed from Memorial Day weekend to mid July. Management spent the downtime developing an enhanced slate of cleaning and safety protocols. Pens and ice buckets were removed from guest rooms. Public seating was halved. Extra heat lamps arrived, ready to brave fall and winter in New England. Wellness activities — most of which are included in the room rate — were tweaked for social distancing and vibe; a seminar on resilience was designed with the pandemic in mind. “There was no playbook for opening a hotel during a pandemic,” said Susan Santiago, the head of lifestyle and Miraval operations at Hyatt, which owns the hotel. “We essentially had to write it and think about how to put it into action at the same time.” Since the hotel opened, most weeks have sold out at the occupancy limit of 50 percent, Ms. Santiago said. ‘We wanted to be very cautious’ The Lytle Park Hotel was on track to open in Cincinnati on March 19. Three days earlier, plans were postponed. Ninety percent of the newly trained staff was furloughed. The small group that remained established a Covid plan using guidelines from various sources, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When the 106-room hotel, which is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, opened on June 3, it did so with about 50 percent capacity in the restaurant, bar and rooftop lounge. Even cocktails got a pandemic spin. “Garnishes were served on the side instead of in the drink,” said Brett Woods, the hotel’s general manager. “We wanted to be very cautious as we opened into this new environment.” Mr. Woods said that establishing those protocols upfront allowed The Lytle Park to come out of the gate with fully functional, if slimmed-down, dining. That strategy has been good for business: The socially distanced rooftop bar, he said, quickly became a hit with Cinncinatians angling for drinks and views this summer. Weekend wait times sometimes exceeded two hours. “Most hotels were doing the opposite: not having any food or beverage,” he said. “Since we were a brand-new hotel, we didn’t want to open without having certain services available to people who would be experiencing this hotel the first time.” ‘It’s been exciting to connect with locals’ After a soft opening in February and nearly immediately shutting down, The Pearl Hotel, in San Diego, reopened in June with Covid-friendly bells and whistles like Zingle, a real-time texting service that allows guests to correspond with hotel management before and during their stay. “Guests are able to limit physical contact while checking in, but they also get personalized service and they feel they’re being taken care of,” said Carolyn Schneider, president and partner of Casetta Group, the hospitality management group that operates the 23-room boutique hotel. After procuring hand sanitizer in bulk this spring, Ms. Schneider worked with Casetta’s creative director to design custom refillable glass bottles that matched the bath amenities. Rooms also feature sealed boxes of sanitized high-touch items, including hairdryers — a detail not lost on Jessica Bender, 51, who has visited The Pearl nine times since July. “Everything’s clean; there’s sanitizer everywhere,” said Ms. Bender, who works in the film industry in Los Angeles. “They even figured out how to have movies by the pool — I’ve watched ‘Dirty Dancing’ out there.” As the Casetta Group gears up to open Casa Cody, a 30-room boutique hotel in Palm Springs, Calif., in early March, Ms. Schneider is reflecting on what she calls a “silver lining” at The Pearl: “It’s been exciting to connect with locals we wouldn’t necessarily meet otherwise,” she said. “A new independent hotel has the opportunity to build a customer base from scratch,” Dr. Walsh, of Cornell University, said. “It might’ve been harder to attract locals before, when people would have gotten on a plane.” ‘When we come out of this, we will be far more agile’ The luxury market segment, meanwhile, has reckoned with how to extend hospitality and high-end flourishes in the absence of, say, the ability to shake guests’ hands. At the new Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River, a kids’ club is off-limits for now, but children can play with individually sanitized toys that have been arranged in their rooms. The private setup might also include a personalized play tent bearing the child’s name. “The expectations from guests when they come to a luxury hotel has not changed,” said Lubosh Barta, the hotel’s general manager. “They expect the highest possible level of service. Despite what is happening around us, they expect it even more.” The opening of the 299-room Four Seasons was delayed from May to December; during those months, management live-streamed trainings to keep staff engaged from home. Mr. Barta said his team adapted in ways that would have been inconceivable in the Before Times — say, positioning lights based on the recommendations of a consultant working from more than a thousand miles away. “No one knows how long this will go on, and we’ve learned to operate in an environment that has been unseen, untested in our life span,” Mr. Barta said. “But as a positive, when we come out of this, we will be far more agile and lighter in the way we do business.” Sarah Firshein is a Brooklyn-based writer. Sean Sherman Is Decolonizing American Food

By building decolonized food systems, the Sioux Chef and Indigenous Food Lab co-founder hopes to create more food security in communities across the United States
A chef and educator, Sean Sherman is one of North America’s loudest voices speaking to the challenges and opportunities within Indigenous food systems. Sherman and partner Dana Thompson co-founded the Sioux Chef, an organization that highlights Native American cuisine while documenting a “decolonized” diet, as Sherman, along with co-author Beth Dooley, did in the James Beard Award-winning cookbook The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen.
Sherman, who belongs to the Oglala Lakota tribe, grew up on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, where he learned firsthand the food security challenges Indigenous communities face in the United States. As he told the New York Times in 2019, his family’s Pine Ridge pantry was often stocked with government-issued rations that they sometimes supplemented with food foraged on the reservation. When he was a teenager, Sherman left Pine Ridge to take a kitchen job in a Minneapolis restaurant. Over the years, his vision evolved to focus on researching and introducing contemporary cuisine made with pre-colonial ingredients to diners around the country, and creating pathways to more nutritious and culturally appropriate foods to Indigenous communities across the U.S.

Sherman and his partners also operate the nonprofit North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NATIFS), which is working to establish a network of leaders in Indigenous farming and culinary communities. Prior to the pandemic, NATIFS and the Sioux Chef were in the process of opening a restaurant, education center, and commercial kitchen focused on providing healthy food to the community. The current health crisis has made that path more difficult, but it’s also made clear the need for a more resilient, accessible food system that helps prevent the types of preexisting conditions that make BIPOC communities more susceptible to diseases like COVID-19. “We want to help support more young Indigenous entrepreneurs as we grow,” Sherman says, “especially once we get past COVID, helping to see more Indigenous chefs to come out of the woodwork and follow their dreams.”
Eater spoke with Sherman about his vision for the future of food and how it fits within the larger context of a global health crisis and social uprisings in Minneapolis and beyond.
Eater: What do you see as the future of food, especially coming from an Indigenous communities and foodways perspective?
Sean Sherman: A lot of our work in the beginning was just raising awareness to what Indigenous foods are and why that’s important and relevant information to understand. Showcasing the amazing bounty of the diversity that we have, both culturally and culinarily, across North America in particular, is our main focus. So for us, it’s been quite a few years of networking, researching, and visiting all these different regions and seeing the amazing food culture that exists everywhere.
What’s really come to light, because of COVID, is our vulnerability and over-reliance on over-processed and commercial foods. And it really strengthens our argument: The understanding of Indigenous food systems is the understanding of how regional food systems work, and I really believe that’s where we need to be moving toward in the future.
We need community-based food systems. We need a lot more local community-based farming systems. We need better usage of our land. Our work is focused on the culinary aspect and developing a lot of education around that. So we’ll be using our commercial kitchen as a showcase for utilizing these healthy and regionally produced foods, and doing it for us, in a cultural way — focused on Indigenous cultures of where we are. But anybody can be learning from these systems.
What sorts of real, concrete change do you see happening in Indigenous communities looking forward five years? Do you have any vision for what could actually take place?
With Indigenous Food Lab, it’s the whole vision. We were originally going to open up the first unit of Indigenous Food Lab this year, with a restaurant, a commissary production kitchen, and a classroom area to teach Indigenous curriculum. Since COVID hit, we decided that we can’t really invest in a dine-in restaurant at this moment, but we’re moving ahead and opening up the educational and production side.
Here in Minneapolis, we’ve been the epicenter of all this social uprising; our community member George Floyd was murdered just a few blocks from our kitchen. Our kitchen is on the main street; all the buildings around us are completely razed to the ground. So there was a lot of community food insecurity happening, which is why we mobilized and started pushing out free meals every day. We’ve been pumping out two to 400 meals every single day this entire summer, and we’re looking at doing it through the whole winter, because who knows what’s going to happen.
But the original vision was setting up the production kitchen so it could be a training center. People would come, and we would show them how to process Indigenous foods for 400 people a day.
Our goal is to work directly with tribal communities. We’re helping them to develop their own focused Indigenous kitchen for their community: menus and recipes that are relevant to that tribe with their language and their environment in mind. Hopefully, once we get those systems set up, we can give them the tools they need to grow better community gardens [with] Indigenous seeds, utilizing some of our partners that are focused on that.
If they have surplus of foods, that they could trade or sell. We’ll have a demand that we’re creating and be able to plug it into our system. So they can sell through us if they want to, or trade with some of the other tribal communities that are going to be doing the same kind of programming.
Our goal is to open up Indigenous Food Labs in cities around the nation. But each Indigenous Food Lab would do the same work of becoming a regional training center, education and support center for creating Indigenous food systems. And we can eventually cross borders.
The globe had been swallowed up by colonialist and capitalistic efforts for so long that we’ve lost touch with a lot of these really amazing foodways that still survive in many regions around the world. It’s going to be really important to understand that cultural diversity and that knowledge base that sits out there. We’re just trying to create something where we can become a center point to save that knowledge for this next generation.
With the pandemic, more people are seeing the cracks in the system that created so many issues for food insecurity. Do you see any opportunity to convince people that this is a model that’s more sustainable than the current one that we have?
We’re not super concerned with what other people are going to think. We see a very clear path for ourselves. We’ve been problem solving [this] even before COVID. It strengthens the work that we’re doing by showcasing [the fact that] if we did have better community-based and regionally based food systems set up, that we could be more food secure.
This is going to be a weird winter. We’re still surging with pandemic cases right now. There’s going to be a lot more unemployment, because restaurants are going to continuously be shut down, and we have no idea what kind of support we’re getting from our own government to get through this. What’s going to happen when flu season hits again?
I think it’s a great time to reset. It’s a great time to reflect, for people to think about something that they could be doing differently. Where are they getting their food? How are they writing their menus? They shouldn’t be relying on these big-box trucks bringing foods in from all over the place. We should be really focused on supporting our local growers, no matter where they are, and developing menus around that.
It doesn’t have to be ego projects. It should be not about the chef in charge. It should really be about, “How can we do this because it’s just beneficial for our own community?” We made the conscious decision ourselves to only serve healthy Indigenous food, and regional Indigenous food on top of that. You have to be socially conscious and aware of the food that you’re serving; it directly impacts your customers, your clients, and their health. So why not make people healthy and happy, and get people used to having this healthy food out there?
You’ve been planning this for a long time, and it seems like there’s been a long coming movement toward more Indigenous food sovereignty in this country. But do you feel more hopeful now than you were before, or do you feel cautious?
We feel absolutely hopeful. This has been a long time building, but our vision keeps expanding and we keep seeing how we can integrate with other communities and other leaders in the food sovereignty movement.
We see a very bright future, and we’re basically stealing some parts of franchise models. If a Five Guys Burgers and Fries can open up 200 units in a few years, why can’t we use a similar system, but do it for good and push healthy food out there? We want people to be aware of the special history of the land that they’re standing on, the true histories of the Indigenous peoples from there, how it differs from other regions, and all the plant diversity that’s around them. We hope we can be really positive role models. We feel like tribal Indigenous communities can be great role models to showcase how they can turn something around.
We have this vision of one day being able to drive across the country stopping at Indigenous-run businesses that are particular to the land that they’re on, from people that are still there, and showcasing the immense amount of diversity that you would see. Every few hundred miles, you’d be in a new region with different foods, with different language, with different cultures and histories. That’s something really to think about, celebrate, and preserve for future generations to see, instead of trying to whitewash everything and say, “American food is hamburgers” or “Canadian food is poutine.” There’s so much more we could be doing that is relevant to where we are, and weaving the Indigenous histories into the fabric of who we are. It’s going to be really important to not ignore those histories.

Umbra Stages in Newburgh
Sixty miles north of Manhattan’s Columbus Circle, in the historic city of Newburgh, Umbra Stages is helping fuel the robust growth of the film and television production and post-production industries across the Hudson Valley. Fully equipped stages, post-production suites, thousands of feet of shop space and furnished offices, dressing rooms, and a hands-on management team of experienced filmmakers have combined to make Umbra an attractive base for productions looking to take advantage of the myriad scenic locations, local crew base and up to 40% tax credits available in the picturesque Hudson Valley region.

Established in 2011 by owner Ted Doering in a 16,000-square-foot motorcycle parts warehouse, Umbra has undergone major upgrades in recent years. Many of the improvements came under the supervision of Summer Crockett Moore and Tony Glazer of Choice Films, independent producers with extensive production credits. “We took an exclusive year-long lease on the building in 2017 for the production of our series Big Dogs,” says Crockett Moore.  “At the end of that production, as our lease was coming to an end, the owners asked us to consider staying on as managers of the facility.  We signed a contract for a two-year trial term, and everything went so well, we just extended our contract for another three-plus years.” By ‘everything’ she means the string of projects they shepherded on Umbra stages like Here Today with Billy Crystal, Mob Town with David Arquette, The Winter House with Lili Taylor, and their biggest production to date, I Know This Much is True starring Mark Ruffalo, as identical twin brothers in a six-episode series for HBO that made Umbra its production headquarters for seven months last year.
“When we were looking for a space that could accommodate our complex and ever-evolving shoot in the Hudson Valley, Umbra really fit the bill,” said Gregg Fienberg, Executive Producer on I Know This Much Is True. “It was a pleasant surprise to find a large stage space of such professional quality and so close to our other filming locations in the area. And the staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful at every turn.”
Improvements implemented under Choice Films’ tenure include:  a high-speed Wi-Fi infrastructure upgrade that allows for a fully secured private VPN for post-production/dailies;  3,500 square feet  of additional, fully furnished office space (for a total of 7,500 square feet);  dual editing stations (AVID or PREMIERE); wardrobe and  commercial laundry suites; redesigns of the catering areas, dressing rooms and showers; and scenic shop upgrades with 6,000 square feet of dedicated scenic, construction and storage areas.
In 2019, The Hudson Valley Film Commission  reported  they assisted 25 productions with an estimated $46 million in direct regional spending, a 55% increase over 2018.  Keeping pace with that growth means providing local skilled crew as well as great facilities.  Umbra Stages and Choice Films have partnered with the City and Town of Newburgh, Orange County Film + Tourism Office and the Blacc Vanilla Community Foundation for an at-risk youth training program, Below the Line Bootcamp.  To-date, three sessions of #BTLBootcamp have trained more than 30 graduates with 70% of those now working in the field on film sets. Choice Films partners with several regional Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and local high schools to take on interns during the year, training them for a variety of production jobs. 
Umbra already has seven feature projects on the slate for this year (coming from California, Ohio and New York City) as well as holds for potential major TV projects they hope to secure. In mid-March Umbra will open another 20,000 square feet of space including a new 10,000-square-foot soundstage, a second kitchen/catering area, four new dressing rooms, and more offices and storage space. Doering also recently acquired a 45,000-square-foot building in New Windsor that is slated for two additional sound stages coming in 2020/2021, with plans for potential further expansion.
In addition to managing the production facility, Choice Films has a busy development roster, planning to produce three films this year and next. “And, our Big Dogs television series will be releasing world-wide this spring,” says Crockett Moore. “Season 2 is already fully written. We have high hopes for the future!”
